Eventually we gave up. Later on we found out he's virtually immune to light/dark element magic. (Flash/Dispel don't work either).

It wouldn't help. Even wiki advises just not to fight it on Thunder/Light/Dark/Firesday so that you don't get the triggers to which it's immune.

It's such *** that mobs can resist grellow proc spells. Like... NUMEROUS times it was Light Threnody(or something), and you can't stick it on light immune mobs. They should just make resisted spells proc or something... so dumb...
Also is Light Threnody *really* that overpowered of a debuff? ==;;

Yeah, we had it narrowed down to Orthrus being weak to either Dark Threnody, Flash, or 1000 Needles, but none of them would land.

Your nin wasn't garbage in Aurore, you just didn't know how to play the job, lol See, actually I did know how to play NIN as a DD/solo/eva tank job right off the bat. ***'s not hard after all, and I have experience with DNC which plays in a very similar manner along with being willing and able to do research on jobs that interest me and an understanding of gameplay concepts that means I know how to gear and execute a job with a minimum of playtime. What actually happened was I gained 4 haste, 5 attack, and enhances Yonin effect by going straight from Aurore to Iga Hakama +2. 5 attack is ~1% at best to my TP phase damage, but still an increase over my output previously. 4 haste on the other hand was at minimum a 5% increase in damage output for me, and in many situations it's more around 10%. It's also faster weakness procs, which opens even more opportunities and means we're not wasting time. You tell me that if I cloned my character and played them both, one with Aurore legs and one with Iga +2, and I'd have the exact same performance on each, I will laugh in your face. You tell me that going from a crappy eva set to a shiny one, meaning that I can drop some of that eva for DD gear if appropriate, and it doesn't increase my capabilities, and I'll laugh all the harder. Even if it didn't increase the number of NMs I can tank, it'd enable me to kill more things in a given timeframe. My time is precious and I only spend so much of it on FFXI, so that's a valuable increase. Let's discuss the limitations of your SAM. You can't roll shadows for ***, the mob may TP more with you on it because it gets more attacks in, and your general output is terrible. You are not fit to tank and you can only barely be considered a DD. All the aggressive play in the world isn't going to make a bit of difference when it takes you a year and a day just to get TP. You have no PDT or MDT gear and as such, combined with your inability to roll shadows worth a damn, you are an MP sink. Now you're dragging down your entire alliance. What then? Knowledge is only half the equation. The tools to use it is the other half, and it's clear you lack both.
lol you forgot atmas, you could wear rse if you wanted to, your gear no longer makes any differce whatsoever, welcome to abyssea. Your gear matters about as much as what clothes you wear in rl while you play. But thanks for getting all rilled up that was fun. Eat some HQ Food, buy all the cruor enhancements, infuse three really good atmas and viola! You can solo anything they put in front of you on whm/dnc buck naked if you want too...if you got the skills.
You also forgot to learn how to read, this whole dialog started a few pages back with my contention that most complaints about the quality of mages in the game are do to lack of skill of the complaining party. Just my observation ss a whm. This wild tangent about my sucky sam gear is oh so completely irrelevant. I have sucky gear for my lolpup too. We could spend a few pages bashing that. But it really doesn't matter when I am playing white mage does it?
And so kids the moral of the story is it doesn't matter what job you decide to level, if you learn how to play it well you will go far in this game. Sure you will meet a couple of douchebags along the way, but don't let it ruin your fun. You can get all hung up on gear and jobs and blah blah blah but then you will have all the fun squeazed out of you and you'll end up like Nightfyre.

A complex question to say the least, simply because of what we can be talking about, dmg output, soloing, the necessity of having a healer, whats the mob etc...
But, if you had to decide which job would be the best to take to 90 (99, whatever), taking these things into account what would you say comes out with the most pros? For example consider a graph, a questionnaire of scale, 1 -10, one category is DMG output over speicified amount of time, one is the ability to Solo on a scale of 1 - 10 (which would most likely rest on the amount of mobs the job can take on as opposed to which can take on the least)
Of these categories, what job would you say comes out with the most points?
