One of my ps2's updated successfully without an issue last night.
However, when I tried to update my other ps2 this morning I received the insufficient space error. I tried multiple times to update, and received the error directly after the check files was completed before it would move on to the actual update.
I did the clean install. After the clean install it finally made it past the check files, and moved onto the actual update. It has been going for a couple hours now, and it at about 17%. *fingers crossed*

After reading Aeil's post about how s/he feels Im curious.
Is there a difference in the scripts/programming between the JP/NA/EU versions?
On regards to the update, Im doing the clean install, all was going well till 76% and I ended up getting d/c'd -.-
Got to start all over now... great...

14 hours later....after doing the clean installation, im still @only 75% of the updates downloaded with a projected 5 more hours to go, not to mention the 2 hours or so it will take to actually install them to the system.
If i ever have to go through this again, im cancelling my ID, in my eyes this screw-up on SEs part was so blatant, and what they are making players like me go through just to get something we paid for (im talking about the latest abyssea expansion) to work is total ***. And before anyone says, "um time to switch to PC?" I have before, and i can even do it now if i wanted to, but i shouldnt be forced to make the switch, like i felt i was since yesterday. I will always prefer playing this on a console, and why i do so is neither here or there, thats another subject.
GL to other PS2/3 players out there dealing with the same *** i am.

Take your time, read the forum like the rest of us. Only ps3 players are reporting it works, Not one single word from a PS2 player saying it works. Unfortunately, I don't read/speak japanese, and i don't know wtf Mariane's SS's are about. I'm assuming it's JP ps2 version, but again, everything i've read is NA posts, and i could care less about a JP version, i want to know about mine. I'm sure all JP ps2 players are online by now, just like 90% of updates put NM's in their time, and 90% of the players online after an update first are JP. Please go post those SS's on an appropriate website where people understand what they say.
What an impolite *** you are.
Yes, that's an japanese PS2 console. I also own an USA console which updated fine. You wanted me to post screenshots of that USA console instead ?
Since there's has nothing wrong with it why would I need to ?

Glad to hear clean installation is working for some of y'all. Sadly I can't reinstall, my PS2 gave out on reading discs a year or two ago so I'm just waiting to see if SE will have a fix. If not I think I'm gonna call it quits.
I don't see why I deserve to have to buy a new system because of something they faulted on.

I'm surprised so many people are still using a PS2 considering a computer that can run FF is extremely cheap these days.

A ps2 that has lasted 8+ years on a video game and had no issues up til now seems to be no reason to replace it with a PC imo. Plus I play on PC as well I just prefer using PS2 when dualboxing mage jobs.

I was gonna play on PS2 when I first read about FF (and my fat one still works, release console too) but decided against it when I saw the PC version. I have to ask though, since I'm assuming you all have PCs (who doesn't these days, even a cheap one?), why play on a PS2 over PC? Just curious. I heard it loads certain things faster than PC but it looks ugly as sin :/

I just prefer to do console/pc for dualboxing. I hate dualboxing on the same platform and PS2 is a ***load better then xbox imo. PS2 also doesn't freeze as much as the xbox. PS2's controller is also way nicer and easier to navigate through alliances for healing. I just prefer PS2 for some things. However, WHM is the only job I can do on PS2 which is what I dualbox most the time anyway. I tried playing my main character on PS2, yeah not having it. I just don't wanna be *** around with 2 keyboards for dualboxing by using two computers so I'd rather use PS2/PC. It's not an "ultimate" experience cause I do love my PC but really. PS2 is my second go to console for this game.

It took a full 16+ hours to reinstall the game, but I FINALLY was able to get back on. I wish you all the same amount of good luck.

Personally I prefer it because unlike my pc, I dont lag no where near. Mind you I say its a PoS pc but anyways. Also as I use my PS3, I love not having wires for either controllers or kb. As far as controller goes I prefer the PS one over xbox for about any type of game period. I do have the controller set up to my pc but Im still limited thanks to the wire. Physical movement is a major thing for me because of medical issues hence the wireless a huge thing for me.
I have to say tho, even after all those pros to PS, the one thing that beats pc over PS is the detail on graphics, like for example a SC or PRO/SHELL you can see a lot of details. If PS had that it would be perfect, but thats just my opinion.
Im finally at 85% with 1 hour to go on update after being D/Cd after like 14 hours and having to start over so really happy right about now. :D

So you mean to tell me i should be patient despite that A) a very big update to that game just happened which of course i am very eager to try out for myself, B) i can fix the problem instead of waiting god knows how long for SE to get off their dumbasses and fix themselves? Your logic fails, if this was an issue that occured last with the pre-update download then i would agree, but that isnt the case, is it?
Anyways, Harrisbanks, did you manage to get it to work? mine is almost done downloading <_>

Yes the screen finally changed over and started installing. Good luck to everyone else having this issue, hopefully you can get on soon!

Is it confirmed then, that by doing a fresh install you can proceed with the update (for most people anyway)? Have a friend who's been waiting to see if there's a fix coming, but if this is the only way around it I'll have to tell him to do reinstall.
The entire treatment of console gamers in this update has been shocking by SE. I play on PC but it just feels like they don't know what to do with these problems and don't anticipate them. SE just hopes everything fixes itself...good luck to all attempting to get it working.

Well hopefully there is a better solution to this than wiping the entire drive, or even portions. I know it's probably not the easiest thing in the world having to code the game for multiple platforms. I'm a month away from my bachelors in software engineering and having to code for multiple OS's, depending on the language etc, can be a pain to say the least. I've never coded with the intent to run something on a specific video game console but I'm assuming that makes it even more complicated with 2 of them to code for, plus the PC. But then again... thats what having people who specialize in that platform working on it's release are for, and what testing is for. The most logical thing I've heard on this thread is that the PS2 only allocates a certain amount to XI and the partition may be full; makes sense with the game increasing in size and one update or another would finally push it over.
Anyway I'm sure SE isn't doing anything dramatic like cutting PS2 support... I used to play on PS2, don't want to anymore but, that doesn't mean others can't... like some PC users seem to think.
Probably a glitch and they'll fix it... they are good about those things... then again... FFXIV wasn't just a bad dream... okay sorry... won't try and steer this to an FFXIV hate troll thread.
Good luck to the PS2 players... hopefully this gets solved, would suck to lose a portion of the community, even for a short time due to an error.

My situation is the same as Rinako. I love to dualbox on pc/ps2. And unfortunately I don't have the disc(s) to clean install, reinstall or w/e it's called on my ps2 anymore. T_T
Glad some ps2 users got their problem solved thou. Please keep trying or posting info for those who don't have disc(s). Maybe SE should send us a copy of the disc or something. :(

Well, the problem seems to be that when SE does a patch, and the PS2 downloads everything, that after the PS2 finishes updating it doesn't delete the temp files used... so even tho PS2 has like 24+ gigs left on the HD, FFXI is looking at the temp folder and seeing thats near full and giving the errors. I'm currently @ 90% after 14+ hours on my reinstall of FFXI (I only reinstalled the core FFXI, not all the expansions) with 2:30 left to finish everything.
Seems kinda silly that SE would do the patches in such a way that they didn't include a command or something to delete the temp files after the game installs them.
I ended up switching to PC for now cause of this, but i still prefer playing on my PS2.

2-3 years TOPS I'd understand why people still play on ps2, but *** 8 years deep man? It's like 14$ + add-ons even basement dwelling kids that started playing this game should be old enough to afford that by now.
Had to reinstall FF tonight due to lolFFXIUIMODS, having a buddy send you entire rom folders / zephr posting patch turned what would've been a 12 hr wait to an hr tops. Get with the times.

I find it sad how people gripe at SE for this. The real failing was Sony pulling the HDD support not even one year after it came out. There's been no updates or new programs designed to deal with the PS2 HDD drivers since its initial release and that's the real problem.
Drivers for any hardware device usually need revision or updates roughly every 18-36 months and the PS2 HDD is way beyond that.

This is the other PS2 where I performed the "Clean Install" instructions from Square Enix:
From 3318 files to 12110 is a lot of difference :\ I wish now I just deleted some files on this one too.
(by the way, it says that the install completion time is unknown)
so im trying to download the update and halfway through stage 1 tells me i dont have enough space on HDD... are ps2 players fucked?
