I don't understand why companies still use the Ye olde model of sales; Put Disc in store, charge $60, Hope it sells, make money (or not wolol) is a really old model.
I like the concept of rentals. Why not make demos more wildly available, then if a person likes it, allow them to rent it for X amount of Y Currency for Z days. I haven't purchased a new game since I was 16 simply because I'm not shelling out 60 dollars for a game I might not like. I don't care how AAA the title is, it's still not worth $60.
Let's make an example,
Say I go to Wally-World and wanna get a new game. I look on a console set up with the list of games I can get, I take my 32GB flash drive and plug it in, then I can feed the machine cash for a rental, or feed it $60 and it'll burn a DVD copy of the game on the spot and provide me a case and disc with a PDF of the game manual.
This eliminates a huge amount of waste in paper, and plastic (especially large game cases made of plastic. This allows me the option of buying a game or renting it digitally with an expiration on the data that'll encrypt it if I choose to not rerent it. This also opens up the model of not needing internet to rent games this way. I personally wouldn't mind running down to the store with $20 to rent a couple of games for 10 days. Since most games are honestly not worth $60+.
You could even do a time card dillio where the game is locked, but you can unlock it for X amount of time so if you get say, your sister coming over from out of country you can cancel your time saving your rental so it isn't wasted and then uncancel it after she leaves.
Or, we could stay to the old model of 60 dollar over sized plastic junk that lasts us 8 hours and is now officially useless to us. Hi2uSingularity, which I pirated and will never purchase simply because it's a waste of money to me.
You could even do $1 an hour gameplay since games last X amount of hours to some people.
Long post short,
Pirating will last as long as the model never changes. The whole point of pirating is receiving IP without paying. The way to fix pirating is to not attack the problem, but solve the underlying issues that cause people to pirate. I don't know what loses a company more, A model that saves people money or a model that forces people to steal from you.
