hello all, my 8 y/o son likes video games but thus far all he wants to do is run around in games like LEGO city undercover and smash things or play Mariocart (he loves cars), I know that’s fun but he’s not really learning to solve problems or having to think about anything to progress in the games (he won’t do the actual levels in LEGO city undercover).

If anyone knows any kid friendly games that require problem solving or any sort of actual thinking to progress in the game instead of button mashers please post a reply.

Terraria is kind of a 2D version of minecraft. i don't know if it counts as problem solving but you can get quite creative building stuff.

stardew valley is a farming/life simulator and also looks kids friendly but i haven't played it.

probably depends a little on how his reading/comprehension skills are developed and what he still perceives to be scary. both games have low age restrictions but terraria has night time with a little more spooky 2D enemies and i don't know about stardew valley but that one also has dungeons/underground areas. i think both games are available for a lot of platforms, even android and both have pretty good reviews.

personaly i'd deem it fine for a 8 year old but i recently learned that at that age even the skeleton turtles in the bowser castle of super mario bros wii can be unsettling for kids.

i'd generally be looking at nintendo stuff like zelda or super mario. that stuff is usually high quality and kids friendly. for PS3 maybe little big planet (mix of creativity and platforming)?

Just thought of this.

Put him on a PC. Let him learn basic WASD/Numpad and maybe some F keys plus mouse controls.

Think of his future.

My son also plays Roblox games to a nauseating degree.

I have to peel him off the computer to breath.

It looks like we will have to get a Switch for most of these, I’ll look and see what Zelda games are on Wii U for now, thx all.

Give a child a game and they play for a day.

Teach your child to farm for you in Final Fantasy XI and you'll have free gil for a lifetime.

My son is about the same age as yours, and for the last year or two he's been pretty obsessed with Terraria. He's also a genius. His teachers all think we're working with him every day because he absolutely dwarfs the rest of his class in learning ability. I feel that it has a lot to do with his desire to learn new things, and how he seems to be teaching himself new things every day just by watching science stuff on youtube. Makes me wish I had access to all of these things when I was a kid .__.

There's a lot of complex machinery that can be built in Terraria using wires and levers and such. My son basically uses it to break the game.

From what we can tell my son is extremely smart but he does terrible in school because he doesn’t want to work and when they try to get him to do the work he throws a fit and gets in trouble... things are going a lot better now at home because he can’t pull that ***with mom.

In the future e-sports are the only games allowed.

(Son also had a Five Nights at Freddy's phase... so I don't think it work anyway)

Braid is a good puzzle game but i'm not sure if its not too much for a 8 year old. puzzles revolve around a time rewinding mechanic. i think it might be available at the nintendo online store but not sure.

Portal is a good one, it has some great puzzles and can teach 'em to think outside of the box. Some of the content might be a bit dark but kids need to learn the cake is a lie early.

The old school FFs (1-6) I always like when I was a kid not adult themed really, lots of reading, lots of problems to solve, whether it was a battle, or getting through the puzzles for some dungeons. Zelda would be good also (old school) seems like the characters we used to play with back and n the day have become adulterized as each new installment of a series went on.

FF especially.

Anywho, there is also the outside, lots of problem solving skills to be aquired building forts.
