What other big streamer/successful players played XI?
Cerberus.Logical said: » Zerowone said: » What is interesting is that FFXI seems to be common denominator for a lot of successful players in fighting game, FPS, and 3PS communities. I have noticed this as well. The fundamentals of classic FFXI were (i) teamwork-oriented, (ii) strategy-focused, and (iii) inundated with complex systems. As many others have mused, this effectively filtered out players who did not thrive in an environment heavy on the above three factors. It is thus not surprising to me that such players went on to become titans and heavyhitters of other online games which have similar qualities. I have noted time and time again that, on the whole, FFXI players (even today) are, more often than not, highly analytical, intelligent, resourceful, communicative, competitive, and sometimes elitist. But again, I think that classic FFXI was the spawning pool of an elite sliver of the gaming population. Offline

He played low level stuff in Windurt, chatting ingame and reading the live chat, not paying much attention to the game. Atcing "excited" few times. The whole content blurred in a blurple fluo-light... Overall seemed to me a sponsored gameplay. But some people in the chat, beside the absurd fanboys spam, was curious/pleased to see him supporting FFXI. It will maybe get someone to reactivate or give a try, nothing noticiable. Unless he's going to do it again, on a regular basis, but i highly doubt. I actually run into someone who just started, who said they play FFXI for the first time in his life, claimed he started ffxi because of ninjas stream. He said he enjoys the game so far. I don't think ffxi will suddenly turn into a mmo with 5k players on every server because of him, but I do think his stream will affect sub number. Stream is a powerful marketing tool and you guys are underestimating the power of it lol. Leviathan.Comeatmebro said: » there's no meaning behind it, it's just a kid who played 11 before and wanted to get back on it like everyone else who reactivates and says hi for a month if you want meaning, see what they have to say at the live event next month From the perspective of hard core community on these forum who do the hardest content, discuss dps math and optimal setup, play with inner circle of serious player in ambu VD, it probably doesn't matter if someone just reactivate for a month and say hi, and made a couple of his viewers sub for a month and say hi too. For SE it's x% increase in revenue this month. I would totally take advantage of it if I work for SE. FFXI has a lot of players thats not like that, but they usually don't belong in the connection circle of player that's like that. So many of us don't run into these people very often. When he mentioned his old name we remembered his name, what job he played and that he was a Taru. I don't recall him being in any of the good endgame linkshells on our server though. Also private servers are dumb and so are the people who waste their time on them. Get a job and pay your damn sub like any other selfrespee... wait, nvm. Not sure I'd consider any of those successful or big.

But again, I think that classic FFXI was the spawning pool of an elite sliver of the gaming population. Some ex-FFXI players became somewhat famous in the fighting game community but not as players as far as I know. Emperor Cow is probably the only FFXI player that played fighting games at a good level that I can remember and even then that's limited. FFXI mostly happened when those people mentioned were teens. As such, it's normal that they tried it out but they most likely never went that far. I know several people who are perma Challenger on LoL, GE on CS GO and so on, they never achieved anything on FFXI. In fact, they all found it unappealing for different reasons. I do agree with you however that people who were deeply interested in FFXI were analytical and so on. Maybe I was too easily influenced back then but several point of view expressed on KI/here when it came to analyzing stuff kind of stuck with me. However, I disagree that it's the same nowadays. The first thing that struck me when I came back 5/6 months ago is that players aren't what you describe anymore. Nowadays, barely anyone cares about pushing a job further, barely anyone cares about anyone else's opinion. They have all the gear they desire, they can clear anything, they firmly believe they are the ***as they are and that it will remain so. On one hand I agree that the game is in such a way that you can afford to take it easy, mostly, but on the other hand, these people have forgotten and given up on old strategies and it's preventing them from clearing some stuff now. I remember a time when you'd say "let me tank Tinnin as SAM" (before it was bandwagoned to death) and people would trust you. Nowadays, you simply suggest using a different strategy and they laugh. I mean, they have the same gear as you, they are Master just like you, who would they listen to your opinion. The values you speak of have disappeared, they're only remnants in the people who played back then, people who were irrelevant back then and now "became relevant" don't have this spark and will most likely never do. Same with most games, or "streaming." /shrug I watch my nephews play it and I just shake my head because it looks so stupid and boring to me. Then I see games like Pokemon getting further dumbed down. I wonder if this newest generation is killing gaming lol.

These days I'm only coming back for the Return to Vanadiel weeks, to do stuff like endgame fishing (those last three fish, grrrr) and starting a Yagrush for the lulz (already got Assaults done thanks to an LS mate). I spend most of my MMO time these days in Shroud of the Avatar. A lot of the reason is because I got to see FFXI in its dying days, and I wanted to see an MMO in its early days. And I got it. Also a single population, no being on the wrong server. Asura.Aeonova said: » He was Dorkmage on Kujata. Ended up getting banned for clipping a LV1 mule into Sky way back in the day. FFXI takes a different skill set than that required to excel at other genre. Even if an example of a successful player across genres exists it''s probably just correlation, and is due to the player's quality as a competitive person in general (willing to learn, diligent blah blah)
Maximillian is "ok" at fighting games at best. His channel is pretty entertaining for a lot of people though and he appeals to the casual crowd, and that apparently does have an effect on the popularity of fighting games. So you don't really need to be a top-tier 1337 player with pimp gear for your channel to boost the popularity of FFXI game. You just need to be entertaining, and make the game look entertaining. That's how you sell yourself + the game to viewers. Cerberus.Senkyuutai said: » Who are those famous/great video game players you speak of? He's not at the level to compete among the top 20 people in the world in official e-sports competition, but saying he's just "ok" would be pretty untrue. He's a good player, not world top level, but a good player. I don't know why you people look at things so often as black or white. Someone is either at the top or meh, everything else is the same. Wut? There's a whole lot of shades of grey in between and Max sits high in that. Way below the best, but still way above your average "ok" player. With this said, I absolutely 101% agree with what you were saying. You don't need to be the best player in the world on a specific game to be making a meaningful contribution in the visibility of that game/genre. Not at all! You're totally right on that.
