I would consider a forum like this to be more of a proto-social media platform. It's not quite as personal as a Facebook or...Google+...but did pave the way for those to exist and flourish.

Mostly is? A lot of people are connected using their real name, and subject can be anything, with a LOT of people using it for "real life". But it's also the most limited because of the short character limit (which has since been changed I believe). It's always been the weakest of social media because of that limit.

In many ways, yes. I would, however, consider FFXI itself a social media. It's basically a global chat room that you can also be invited into a smaller room at the same time, while being able to send group messages to your LS/party, and PMs via /yell. While in this chat room, you can also go and slaughter innocent animated rabbit, sheep, and fight dragons.
This is the most obtuse thread I've ever read.
