In the unlikely event that S-E changes the format of a specific packet that a plugin or addon sends, is there a way for the change to be detected? Or will the plugin/addon just send using the old format, which could be problematic?

It will be very problematic. We won't notice until it's too late. The question is whether or not they actually do it and whether or not they care. History points towards "no" for both of them. But that's no guarantee, if you wanna play it absolutely safe, you can't use anything that injects outgoing packets. Incoming packets can crash you, but are otherwise generally harmless.

That's what I thought. Thanks for the quick response. I'm willing to take the risk but others I know aren't so I just thought I'd double check.
