So I just finished building a PC in New York and UPS'd it back to my place in California. When I opened up the box there was a dent in the bottom of my case (those losers obviously dropped my ***).

Everything seems to work fine except either the motherboard or the video cards are broken.

The CPU and DRAM check okay on the POST for the mobo but i get the 1 long, 3 short beeps when it gets to the VGA check. This indicates an Enhanced Graphics Adapter (EGA) error.

Now I need to figure out if the GPU cards are broken and the mobo can't read them, or the slots the GPU cards go in are all broken.

Just so you know I have 2 hd 5870's, I tried each of them seperately in all 4 different slots and had no success with any of them.

So either both of my GPUs are broken or my mobo is (hopefully it's my mobo)

Anyways I was wondering what you guys thought?

Btw one of the GPU slots moves way more then it should... is it possible that it broke and therefore all the other ones won't work, meaning it is a mobo problem and my GPUs are fine?

your expansion slots shouldn't be moving at all. sounds like the motherboard.

And yes to just one being messed up making the entire thing fail. Generally the post well check them all as a collective unit, not individually.

Yeah I had a feeling... would be really weird for BOTH cards to be broken.

But yeah I'm guessing when the UPS *** dropped the case, the weight of both cards crossfired together broke the bottom slot.

Now What are my options? I no longer have the box the mobo came it, let alone all the pieces, so would I even be able to return it for a replacement?

Will UPS take my whole pc and refund me the full price or what?! Can I even count on UPS? Or will they just take forever and waste my time?

Or should I just buy a new mobo and just eat the money loss?

If it was insured on the delivery, I suggest talking to UPS. They should be able to compensate you for it. If you're REALLY good with your words...might be able to get compensated for the whole thing...

Only option though as far as actually getting it fixed is to buy a new motherboard, just depends who's pocket its coming out of here.

What should I say to get compensated for the whole thing just in case something else might have broken?

well you could always play the stupid card.
"My PC cost me this much and now its broken!"

They don't need to know what exactly went wrong with it. ;)

doesn't mean you know whats wrong it. all you "know" is something broke and "you don't know what". And I highly doubt UPS is going to hire some kind of specialist just to figure it out.

Back to this now. Will UPS look at the exact parts and crosscheck or could I slip in some older shittier parts and well you know :P?

odds are what they'll do is just take a look at the cost of the damages (be it motherboard or whole computer depending what you tell them) and then they'll pay you out for it if it was insured or if they are feeling nice. As for what you replace it with, it won't matter.

Example. Friend of mine had his house broken into. Among the things they stole, they got his PS3. His was a 60gb backwards compatible model, mind you they stopped making those. Its been valued online at about $1000+. He claimed the $1000, got the $1000, went out and bought one of them new slim ones for $300. Now this is through an actual full blown insurance company, and they didn't even bother seeing what he replaced with. It doesn't matter because they cover the value of what you have lost, not what you replace it with.

So basically, claim whatever you want there, but you can replace with a cheaper motherboard in the end.

Use FedEx for shipping anything but Dirt and Pudding... Seriously.

Just so I don't incriminate myself, let's just say a favorite game of UPS loaders a "Friend" worked with, is "How many times can you bounce this ***off the side of the truck?". Fragile items were a 1.5x multiplier.

Seriously...

FedEx.

Well since I do work for UPS Freight(not package) the best advice i can give you is to call them and go ahead and file a claim report.

Not really sure how the package side works for claims but either they'll pay for the broken part(s) or they may have you ship the pc to them so they can send it out for inspection(should be no cost to you).

Sorry i couldn't help more since i don't know how package handles claims. But you should definetly call them and tell them and file a claim(hope you have the tracking number from the box).
